Abstract
The population level of dementia is influenced by many factors over the lifecourse of an individual. Recently within the UK it has been shown that dementia prevalence can decrease as well as increase within a population that is ageing. The impact on dementia of changes in the risk factors will be estimated. Future changes in dementia will be projected based on the known changes in risk factors seen in the population and the relationships between these risk factors and dementia seen in CFAS II. The research team is composed of CFAS researchers who are either involved in the epidemiology or who are modelling projections for disability onset. The research will be based at the University of Cambridge where the CFAS team are based. The research assistant for the analysis is already in post and undertaking analysis on CFAS data. This proposal will have the potential to impact on Public Health England s dementia risk reduction programme by providing a better understanding of the scope for, and effectiveness of, modifying dementia risk factors on the incidence and prevalence of the condition.
Aims
The aim of this proposal is to investigate the risk factors that have caused the change in dementia within the population and project the potential future trends for dementia. Scenarios for further dementia reduction at a population level will also be explored. The plan is to use the recent data collected from the MRC Cognitive Function and Ageing study II and compare the risk for dementia now as to that seen in CFAS I undertaken two decades ago.
