Abstract
Dementia is common in general hospitals but care is often poorly managed. Involving carers in care planning and delivery could help to improve care, but there is no consensus on what carer involvement means, or on preferences for involvement. This research will use quantitative and qualitative methods to explore carer involvement (preferred and actual) among patients, carers and staff, and methods of promoting satisfactory involvement. Outputs from the research will be developed into a framework to inform the planning and implementation of carer involvement practices that meet the needs of patients, carers and staff.
